A Forum on the prospect of Jute fibre titled “Golden Fibre in the Green Development” was organised jointly by the International Jute Study Group (IJSG) and the Embassy of Bangladesh in Belgium and on 16 November 2012 in Brussels Chambers of Commerce (BECI), Brussels. The forum was followed by a buyer-sellers meet.

The event was participated among others by MEP, European Commission officials, members of Federation of the Belgian Textile, Wood and Furniture Industry (Fedustria), jute & jute goods traders both from Europe and Bangladesh, environment groups, think tanks located in Brussels and Embassy officials. A four member delegation from Dhaka led by Major General Humayun Khaled,Chairman, BJMC also attended the forum.

The meeting was moderated by H.E. the Ambassador of Bangladesh Ms. Ismat Jahan. In her opening address, Ambassador Jahan highlighted the growing importance of jute, an environment friendly natural fibre, particularly in the context of its increasing significance in “green development”. She underscored that the jute sector has to reposition itself to explore the possibilities. Unless it is strongly supported internationally, the world will be deprived of a valuable eco-friendly fibre.

She recalled that IJSG was established as sole International Community Body (ICB) for jute and kenaf in 2002 and it was at the EU’s initiative that IJSG got its unique mandate of being the only ICB with specific objective of ‘poverty alleviation’, ‘women empowerment’ and ‘sustainable development’. Considering the important mandate of IJSG and the growing significance of the jute sector globally, she urged EU’s support for extension of IJSG’s present TOR beyond 2014.

Mr. Bhupendra Singh, Secretary General, IJSG presented a power point on the prospect of jute fibre describing the various aspects of innovative use of jute goods and the comparative advantage of using jute fibre as a viable and sustainable product for human being. He reiterated the pioneering role of IJSG in promoting the cause of jute in both producing and consuming countries and put importance on the private-public partnership in this sector.

Mr. Seamus Gillespie, Director, EEAS, EC stated that jute can play an enhanced role in regional integration between Bangladesh and the EU. He assured the extended support from EC and reiterated that it is critical to raise these issues from the Government of Bangladesh to the EU. In her message, MEP Ms. Jean Lambert, member of the Green Group of the European Parliament hoped for greater support for the jute sector of Bangladesh.

Other speakers mentioned about enhancing the standards of the whole supply chain of jute production which is a preference for the European buyers. They urged upon the producers to produce fashionable and innovative products so that these products could go with the transformation of the society at large. They put importance on the cooperation between producing countries, international organizations and the policy makers to re-invigorate the jute sector. A carpet factory visit to BALTA for the participants was organized on 15 November 2012.

The 13th meeting of the Private Sector Consultative Board (PSCB) was held on 17 November 2012 at the conference room of the Embassy Bangladesh. Several associate members of IJSG participated in the meeting and discussed various issues of jute sectors. Major General Humayun Khaled has been elected as the Chairman of the Board in the meeting, the detailed report and record of decisions of the meeting will be available on IJSG website soon.
