Ant : A Poem by Dr.Syed Md. Zainul Abedin

Ants are moving inside my computer monitor
I feel helpless where to find an exterminator

What the humans have done to the ant community
Why they come in groups to attack our property
Who is responsible to invite this menace
How can we get rid of such penance

Ants plundered our sugar and bread
They damaged clothing by eating thread
They eat flowers and roots of plants in the garden
They carry away food of pets and human
They bite and inject painful formic acid
I wonder why they have so much greed

I am totally upset by this tiny vermin
It has conspired to stop my writing

Shaheed Minar : A Poem by Dr.Syed Md. Zainul Abedin

Shaheed Minar has become alive
Thousands proceed to place flowers
Love and respect thrive
For the valiant language martyrs
Leaders and ordinary people
Have joined the stream together
Sad song spreads as ripple
Solemn processions move with prayer

The killers shot bullets to stop voice
They could not think its reaction
The young activists had no choice
They fought bravely to honor passion

Speaking in mother language is a human right
The brave Bengali boys began the fight

Mosaic : A Poem by Dr.Syed Md. Zainul Abedin

Mosaic

Mosaic is a form of art
It can easily charm your heart
You can see mosaic on your floor
Broken stone and glass makes its core

Mosaic embrace buildings like flowers
You can look at their beauty for hours
Some leaves may give you pleasant surprise
With artistic mosaic on them like golden prize
But I like to tell the truth for knowledge of  all
Those leaves are diseased and destined to fall

The other day I walked to a lofty roof for fun
Pleasant air played with me as children run
I looked at the sky and saw mosaic there
Fluffy cloud and blue of sky made them with care
Suddenly my eyes turned towards the land
Mosaics of  flowers and greens  made lovely stand
I thought it  a map of gifted state
Where people lived happy and wished great

Memories of  past events came as mosaic
It was like a movie mixed with truth and fake
The beauty of mosaic touched everything
The treasure of nature made me sing

(Inspired by the beauty of mosaic)

Katy Did and Katy Didn’t : A Poem by Dr. Syed Zainul Abedin

Katy Did and Katy  Didn’t,
Heard the cool song the air brought.

Looked near and looked far,
I could not see any singer.

Checked the green trees,
Checked the lovely flowers.
Checked the soft grasses,
Checked the lofty bowers.

Some angels were around I thought,
To sing,”Katy Did and Katy  Didn’t”.

Why they sing such strange thing?
Who knows its hidden meaning?

I wish someone comes and opens the knot,
Who sings, “Katy Did and Katy  Didn’t”.

Forest Calls Me : A Poem by Dr.Syed Zainul Abedin

Forest calls me again and again.
Forest tells me to feel her pain.Feller cuts trees like slayer.
He does not give heed to her prayer.
Birds and butterflies flutter in fear.
Ferns and flowers shed their tear.
All other wildlife cry for life.
Cruel feller growls with knife.Forest calls me day and night.
Forest cries to see her plight.

I pretend to be busy over greater task.
Nobody knows me under my mask.
I give lecture and write against felling,
People get charmed by  story telling.
They give awards for my deed!
They chant slogans to inspire my bid!

Poor forest calls me again and again.
Her frantic calls die in vain.

The Farmhouse – A Poem of Syed Zainul Abedin

The farmhouse is lively in the serene December,
The music of the victory is humming everywhere.
The farmer feels no fatigue in arranging the festival,
Disappeared all troubles and blood freezing fear.

It was a very hard time just the other day,
The demons plundered the paddy of the farm.
Hundreds of the farmers’ sons lost their lives,
Housewives embraced death of honour to resist harm.

The farmhouse turned elated with joy once again,
Million names, blood and sweat are now events of the past.
Hills of paddy swelled up in the farmyard,
Jubilant butterflies and swans move around fast.

The farmer’s innocent son sits beside the grave of his mother,

Weeps fearlessly placing fresh flowers in her honour.

One Morning of The Spring in My University Campus – Dr. Syed Zainul Abedin

Life in university is always a memorable event. It is not unlikely that an alumnus feel nostalgic when some thought on the university life comes across his or her memory.I encountered a passionate experience this morning when I went for a visit to the campus for some business. This campus is very special for my life and career.I got admitted in 1972 and left the campus in 1977 after graduation. Though the name of educational establishment was Bangladesh Agricultural Institute when I got admitted, this was transformed into a university later as the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University.

The campus was decorated by the flowers of mango trees. The lovely inflorescences of mango covered most of the canopies of the mango orchard and plants scattered across the campus. The advent of spring is declared by the emergence of mango flowers. The Nobel Laureate poet,Rabindranath Tagore composed the famous poem,’Amar Shonar Bangla….(My golden Bengal)’ indicating that mango flowers bloom in the spring. The other plants that flower to welcome the spring are bauhinia, coral, shimul, polash, krishnochura and shaddock. All these plants were in the campus with their wonderful blooms. The fragrance emitted by these flowers had made the campus a paradise on the earth.Bees and butterflies were flying on the flowers to collect nectar assisting in pollination. There were birds to collect food from the flowers and other sources.

I walked to the horticultural garden. The protected area accomodated many flowers and vegetables.A large

rose garden was there with many varieties. The roses were pink, red, yellow, white, green and mixed. Some of them were very large while some were miniature types. Some had fragrance while others were without any smell.

The vegetables were tomato, cabbage, spinach, onion and many others. Most of the horticultral crops were grown for experiments to understand the production, profit and promotional potential.I met some teachers and researchers in the garden.

I talked with a teacher-researcher who developed some short duration mustard varieties to fit beteween two rice crops which is staple food of our people. He was a successful innovator and continues his work on mustard genetics and breeding program.I visited his experimental fields which reached the harvesting stage. There were some fields of pulses around the fabulous tower erected for holding permanent agricultural fairs.

There were some experiments on rice and wheat too.Various equipments were being used in the experimental fields by trained personnel. All looked very busy to make use of the cool morning weather.

Then,I went to the large cannon ball trees to see their amazing flowers. All the trees carried flowers on their trunks. The cannon ball tree is said to be a rare plant. It carries wonderful flowers that look like the hood of cobra. It is also said that the fruit which resembles cannon ball are poisonous. However poisonous the fruit or flower of this plant may be,I always felt a crazy attraction for this plant, particularly, its amazing flowers.

After the visit of the campus resources,I met a number of persons to accomplish my business.I was welcomed by them.Shared about my passion with them.It was a wonderful morning of spring in my beloved educational centre.

When coming back I looked to the avenue trees of mast tree and road side jackfruit trees. The jackfruit tree were bearing flowers on the trunks and main branches. The beauty of the campus was enhanced by the trees in the campus.
